MNP: Canadian middle market M&A fell 34.1% in Q3 to 170 deals
Canadian middle market deal activity fell sharply in Q3, even as the outlook in the report stays cautiously optimistic.
MNP's Canada Middle Market M&A Update for Q3 2026 reports deal activity down 34.1% quarter over quarter, with 170 deals in Q3 against 258 in Q2. Industrials led with 46 transactions, or 27.1% of the total. Communications, utilities, and healthcare saw the steepest declines.
The report page was undated in the read, so this is treated as a Q3 recap, not as breaking news. The outlook is described as cautiously optimistic on improved Canada US trade relations.
For business buyers and sellers, a 34.1% quarterly drop changes negotiating leverage, not the underlying math. Fewer closings mean sellers need a cleaner story on earnings and transition, and buyers who can close with financing and a transition plan in place have a wider field. Industrials leading at 46 deals also points to where buyer attention is concentrated right now.
