Dental M&A Q3: DSOs made 30 of 51 deals, only 16 were PE backed
Dental dealmaking in Q3 was led by operators rather than by private equity, in a mix that matters for owners planning an exit.
The Dental Deal Report weekly recap, published Oct 31, reports that DSOs made 30 of Q3's 51 dental deals and only 16 were PE backed. The recap is a single trade source, citing Becker's data.
Two items frame the quarter. First Choice Dental added Milwaukee Dental Partners' three offices, in West Bend, Jackson, and Saukville, reaching 20 Wisconsin locations. Spain's Vivanta shut its remaining clinics Oct 26 for an orderly liquidation, with all 124 locations for sale.
For dental owners and buyers, the takeaway is the buyer mix. A market where DSOs close 30 deals and PE backs only 16 is a market where operating scale and integration, not just financial sponsorship, is driving transactions. Owners should test both buyer types, and buyers should price on the operating plan that a DSO buyer can actually run.
